Empowering women against disinheritance, a project with Human Angle, Nigeria

This project was implemented by Human Angle, an organisation that has been working in Nigeria to protect the right of widows to inherit their deceased husbands’ estate, without being dispossessed by their in-laws. Human Angle uses the following ways to achieve this aim:

1. Working with religious leaders – both Muslim and Christian – to raise awareness about legal protections available under the Marriage Act (applicable to Christians) and Muslim principles of inheritance (applicable to Muslims)
2. De-mystifying customs and beliefs that dispossess women
3. Raising public awareness among women and men about the importance of having wills written to prevent disinheritance
4. Training on how to write a will
5. Encouraging women to gain financial literacy, including knowledge of their husband's finances, and to achieve economic independence in their own right
6. Training girls and boys through a campaign "Every Child An Advocate" to advocate with parents for children’s right to a secure future in the event of the parents' deaths

These strategies were implemented through the dissemination of multi-lingual print materials, and through radio talk-shows, focus group discussions and seminars with women’s groups.
