UK: Iraqi women's internship programme

Women's National Commission The Women's National Commission (WNC) was awarded funding from the British Council to run an internship programme for women from Iraq representing the diversity of Iraqi regions, faiths, ethnicities, political and social affiliations.
The aim of the programme was to capacity-build Iraqi civil society groups to engage more effectively with the decision-making structures in Iraq on issues of gender equality and equity.
WLUML notes how, in its identification of the Iraqi women interns, the British government's Department for Trade & Industry specifies not only the religious identity of the interns but their sectoral identities too. Iraq was a country which considered itself secular.
