UK: Conservative Catholic influence in Europe

Information on the Catholic Action Group (CAG), a small but very vocal conservative group in the UK, launched in 2005 and opposed to initiatives concerning sexual health and reproductive rights.
In its first few months of life CAG attracted a considerable amount of media coverage as it embarked on a smear campaign calling for a boycott of CAFOD, the official overseas development and relief agency of the Catholic church in England and Wales.
CAG’s campaign was based upon the development agency’s qualified support for the use of condoms to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. CAG has promised action on a number of other fronts, but as you will discover upon reviewing the fact sheet, there is much less to CAG than meets the eye.

The CAG report is part of the CFFC investigative series Conservative Catholic Influence in Europe and our continued commitment to provide research on and expose conservative efforts to undermine sexual and reproductive health and rights. Previous fact sheets have been published on Opus Dei, the World Youth Alliance, Rocco Buttiglione (former nominee for the EU Justice Commissioner) and European Parliament Women’s Committee chair Anna Zaborska.

The Catholic Action Group fact sheet was produced by Catholics for a Free Choice (CFFC). Other resources and publications may be found at their website www.catholicsforchoice.org
