Tanzania: 20 new judges appointed

Guardian President Jakaya Kikwete has appointed twenty new Judges of the High Court.
A statement recently issued by the Court of Appeal said the judges would assume their new duties after being sworn-in at a date to be announced later.
The statement signed by the Senior Deputy Registrar of the Court of Appeal Sophia Wambura, named the new judges as including Aisha Nyerere, a daughter-in-law of the late Mwalimu Nyerere.
Before her new appointment, Aisha was the Resident Magistrate In-charge of Kilimanjaro Region.
Other new judges are Augustine Mwarija, former registrar of the Court of Appeal, Godfrey Shaidi formerly the Director of Public Prosecutions, Alice Chingwile, who until her appointment, was the Deputy Director for Constitutional and Legal Affairs in the Attorney General's office.
Others are Robert Makaramba, former Commissioner for Human Rights and Good Governance Commission, Gadi J.Mjemmas, former Executive Director for the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance and Iman Aboud.
Before her appointment, she was a Deputy Director for Administration in the President's Office charged with Public Service Management.
The list further includes Agathon A.Nchimbi who was the Director of Primary Courts, Court of Appeal prior to his new appointment, Shabani Lilla, formerly a District Registrar of the High Court,Arusha Zone, Stella Mugasha, formerly with the Attorney General's Office in the Electorate Commission and Zaiduni N.Chocha, who was Acting Deputy Registrar, Court of Appeal.
Other appointee Judges are Amiri Mruma, Sekleti Kihiyo, formerly a Zanzibar High Court Judge, Aishiel N.M. Sumari, former Deputy Director, Department of Public Prosecutions in the office of the Attorney General, Kakusulo M.Sambo who was Deputy Chairman for the Industrial Court and Mwanaisha Kwariko who was a District Registrar of the High Court for Iringa High Court Zone.
Former Advocate of the High Court Aloyse Mujulizi has also crossed over from the Bar to the Bench upon appointment.
He is joined by Augustino A.Shayo, fomerly a High Court Registrar, Frederick Werema, fomerly a Director for Constitution and Human Rights in the Office of the Attorney General, and Lawrence Uzia, who was until his new appointment, the Director for District Courts up to the Court of Appeal.
The appointment of the Judges comes in the wake of an earlier request made by Chief Justice Barnabas Samatta to the government during a judicial commemoration sometime this year.
The Chief Justice had requested the government to do all it can to increase the number of Judges and Justices of the Court of Appeal and the High Court of Tanzania.
Some few months ago, the President appointed and swore in two new lady Justices of the Court of Appeal, namely Nathalia Kimaro and Angela Kileo, who significantly added to the existing number of the Justices of Appeal.
