The Global campaign to Stop Killing and Stoning Women (SKSW Campaign) welcomes the appointment of Michelle Bachelet as the first Under-Secretary-General for the new UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). In her first interview with UN radio, Ms. Bachelet noted that ‘women do not have the same opportunities as men regarding the most essential human rights. Women are discriminated [against]. Their rights are violated. There are still some places where women are mutilated. There are places where women can receive terrible punishments.”[1]

The appointment of Ms. Bachelet to this important position is a major achievement by women’s movements in many parts of the world, especially those who lobbied for the creation of this post for many years.  We share the collective optimism of many of her well-wishers that her appointment will create a positive impact on the lives of women and girls: particularly those who face gender-based violence and discrimination from state and non-state actors, those living in poverty; those in situations where they are still regarded as less than humans and as property to be owned and to be disposed of; those who live in dire situations caused by conflicts and environmental disasters; those who were forced to migrate and ended up being trafficked for their and their families’ survival; and those who are subject to arbitrary arrests, torture and murder because they defy traditions and social norms when they stand up for their rights and those of others.

We look forward to engage and collaborate with Ms. Bachelet and UN Women in our common pursuits for women’s human rights, particularly in addressing the mis-use of religion, traditions and customs to justify obstacles in all spheres of endeavors toward gender equality and women’s empowerment.
