ويمثل الحوار الدائر حول حجاب المرأة الذي اتخذ منه رمزا لهويتها كمسلمة أو زيها نموذجا واقعيا لعمل مثل هذه النظم القمعية، ويأتي الجدل الصامت بين الرئيس الأمريكي "باراك أوباما" والرئيس الفرنسي "نيكولا سركوزي" أحد أعراض هذا الداء المستشري، ففي الرابع من شهر حزيرات- يونيو عام 2009 أعلن أوباما أمام البرلمان المصري أن حكومة الولايات المتحدة قد لجأت إلى القضاء لحماية حق النساء والفتيات في ارتداء الحجاب ومعاقبة كل من ينكر عليهن هذا الحق، وبعد مرور يومين وفي أثناء زيارته لفرنسا، شجع السيد أوباما نظيره الفرنسي السيد ساركوزي على إنهاء حظر ارتداء الحجاب في المدارس العامة، فرد عليه السيد ساركوزي بحدة قائلا له "إن النقاب يرمز إلى خضوع المرأة ومذلتها". ولقد تشكلت لجنة برلمانية تضم مختلف الأحزاب السياسية للبحث في مسألة ارتداء النساء للنقاب في فرنسا، وستعد هذه اللجنة إجراءات قمعية تتماشى مع الدول الأوروبية الأخرى.

In this issue, we welcome the launch of the programme “Women reclaiming and re-defining cultures: Asserting rights over body, self, and public spaces”, a joint venture between WLUML and the Institute of Women’s Empowerment (IWE), which brings together women from the Muslim world to examine and discuss how systems of culture, tradition and religion, are used as instruments to legitimize their oppression.

Yemen: New humanitarian project to help widows

The project is called Milad Al-Amal Foundation Project for Humanitarian Services and helps women who cannot support themselves after their husbands have died or gone missing.

International: Impact of religion on women’s leadership roles

Historically it has been sometimes assumed that secular and left-of-centre parties are more willing to promote women in politics, while conservative and religious parties limit women’s participation in politics and public life.
